We know, for example, that it is one of the most powerful plants in the jungle, classified as an adaptogen, and it is said that the Incas knew no diseases thanks to it. Amazonian healers have turned to it since time immemorial. Its healing power lies in the bark of the vines, which the indigenous people cut with machetes in a way that does not harm the tree, allowing it to continue to thrive in the rainforest.

Vilcacora is found throughout the Amazon – from Peru to Ecuador to Brazil and beyond. This large vine with oval leaves and hooked thorns, resembling cat claws (hence the name cat’s claw), wraps around trees.

It contains aminoglycosides, sterols, polyphenols, terpenes, flavonoids, and oxindole and indole alkaloids, which indigenous people of the Amazon most commonly extract by preparing a drink from the bark, cut into so-called threads. They wash, clean, and place a 20-gram dose into 1 liter of water and bring it to a boil. After setting the pot aside, the drink is ready for consumption in the morning. Cold preparation is also good, though it doesn't utilize the full potential of this sacred plant.

How to Prepare Vilcacora

• Pour 250 ml of boiling water over 1 teaspoon, stir well, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then strain and drink.
• Another (less traditional) method of preparation involves boiling 2 teaspoons in 0.5 liters of water for about 20 minutes. Then let it sit overnight, strain in the morning, and drink throughout the day.

Tip: If the taste of vilcacora is too strong for you, you can flavor the drink with lemon and honey.
