Product detailed description
If you can't avoid such light any other way, put on these red glasses from lighting guru Hynek Medřický. The glasses filter wavelengths of 460-580 nm, so no interfering light reaches your eyes from the side, top, bottom or around your nose. Vertical slits in the wide sides also prevent fogging. Before going to sleep, your eyes are only treated to a dim orange light that mimics fire. This principle brings us back to nature, in harmony with natural cycles, while building on the scientific knowledge of chronobiology and evolution.
Let's shine a light
In addition to vision, your eyes have a developmentally older, non-visual system in their repertoire. This is responsible for circadian anchoring and timing, including the production of melatonin before sleep and at night, as well as suppressing its production during the day.
Specifically, it is mainly the intrinsically sensitive melanopsin ganglion cells (ipRGCs) that contain the pigment melanopsin. The latter is sensitive to short blue, cyan and green wavelengths. When these components of light hit the retina, they, among other things, prevent the production of melatonin. It also makes you feel awake in the morning and during the day.
But when such light hits your retina before sleep and at night, it gives the body a false signal that sleep time is not approaching, further suppressing melatonin production. This may make it harder for you to fall asleep, and it takes a toll on your overall sleep quality. At the same time, it is understandable that such a significant interference with the body's natural rhythm increases the incidence of various civilizational ailments in the long run.
Return to nature
In the daytime, you need artificial lighting to mimic a clear sky for concentration and performance. In the evening, after work, you should use less intense, warmer white light, with less blue and green light, which should be positioned to mimic the sunset, roughly at eye level. About ninety minutes before you go to sleep (and if you wake up at night), you should then only give your eyes a dim orange light without the blue, cyan and green light that shines below eye level, mimicking fire. Makes sense, doesn't it? This principle brings us back to being natural and in tune with nature's cycles while building on the science of chronobiology and evolution.
Hormone of the night
The sleep hormone, night hormone or photoperiod hormone, melatonin is known by these nicknames. It is produced in the body when the sun goes down and the colour of light changes, and at night it plays a crucial role not only for the quality of sleep. Melatonin levels in the body will rise to a "healthy" nighttime level unless a blue wavelength signal of around 460 nm lands on the retina of the eye.
